MEN: UCLA Overcomes Bad Weather to Top UNLV, 12-9

Sophomore middie J.R. Borneman registered a team-high seven points on four goals and three assists to lead UCLA to a 12-9 victory over UNLV in an MCLA Division I game Friday night in Los Angeles.

Freshman attackman Trevor Gudim added six points on three goals and three assists, junior attackman Ryan Menefee had three points on two goals and one assist and senior middie Andy Morris scored twice to help the Bruins (2-1) win their second straight.

Junior defenseman Jon Jardim had a goal to round out the scoring for UCLA, which won a game that was played in a quagmire. There was heavy rain most of the day in Los Angeles, including throughout the game, which was played on a grass field.

Defensively, freshman goalie Martin Alonzo saved 17 shots.

“The weather was horrendous,” UCLA head coach Jacques Bagley said. “I thought we did play pretty well, considering the situation. I thought our players responded well to playing back-to-back games.”

In defeat, Kyle Morse scored seven goals and added an assist for UNLV (0-2), which has lost both its games this season by three-goal margins.

UCLA led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, 6-4 at halftime and 9-5 at the end of the third quarter.

UNLV came back early in the fourth quarter and closed to within a goal at 10-9 after Morse scored his seventh with 10:47 remaining in regulation. But Borneman answered with back-to-back goals at 6:18 and 2:03 to seal it for the Bruins.

“One team wanted to play in the bad weather, and the other team didn’t,” UNLV head coach Gary Campo said. “UCLA played well. It didn’t look like the elements affected them at all.”
