TEX HS: The Woodlands to Host Jack Schantz Memorial Lax Day
From Press Releases
Four Woodlands lacrosse teams – from 5th and 6th graders to the varsity team - will face competitors from Cy-Fair, Houston and Kingwood at The Woodlands High School as they participate in the annual Jack Schantz Memorial Lacrosse Day, Saturday April 4 from 9 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Organizers encourage lacrosse fans to celebrate the life of former Woodlands High School lacrosse coach Jack Schantz by cheering on The Woodlands’ lacrosse teams. The following is the day’s schedule:
9 a.m. - JOPA Northstars (5/6 grade Woodlands team) against Cy-Fair
10:30 a.m. - Woodlands Girls Varsity against Houston United Lacrosse Club
12:30 p.m. - Woodlands Boys JV against Kingwood
2:30 p.m. - Woodlands Boys Varsity against Kingwood
4:30 p.m. - Woodlands Boys Senior Recognition
This year marks the first time that Highlanders varsity girls will play in the memorial event. To follow the lead Coach Schantz set by giving back to the community, any profits raised that day will go to the Jack Schantz Memorial Lacrosse Fund, which is used specifically to give back to the game to fund needed projects such as equipment purchases and team travel expenses.
This year, the Highlanders’ varsity and junior varsity team players carry the memory of Coach Schantz on the left sleeves of their uniforms. A small rectangular navy blue and gold emblem with an anchor and crossed lacrosse sticks represents the legacy of Coach Schantz, who inspired so many lacrosse players, parents and fans. The anchor symbolizes Schantz's service in the U.S. Navy as a commander and pilot.
"We wear the emblem and celebrate the day quite simply as inspiration," said Scott Hirvela, Woodlands Highlanders Lacrosse Club board member. "It's inspiration to play harder, to get up when we are down, to focus on what we can do, not what we can't, to be an inspiration to others, to lead selflessly and by example, to give something back to the game and our community, and to remember that what counts isn't just what happens on the field of play, but how we conduct ourselves off the field too. These are the qualities that drove Jack. It's these qualities we hope provide inspiration to our players. It's these qualities that help make good lacrosse players great, and more importantly remind us of all the opportunities the sport of lacrosse has provided and our responsibility to give something back."
Tickets for adults are $5 at the gate; children, students with IDs and Woodlands Lacrosse Value Card holders may enter free of charge. Concessions and T-shirts will be available. Woodlands Lacrosse sponsors are Legends Sports Complex, Lacrosse 4 All and Corporate Incentives.
