TEX GIRLS: Susan Killeavy Leads Westwood Past McNeil, 20-7

Westwood senior attack Susan Killeavy had a season-opening game to remember Monday night.

Killeavy registered a career-high 11 points on six goals and five assists to lead Westwood to a 20-7 victory over McNeil in the Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League season opener.

In the first girls varsity lacrosse game played in the nation, the Belmont Abbey-bound Killeavy scored repeatedly. And when she wasn’t scoring, she was setting up goals at an almost equally rapid clip. Killeavy said she didn’t realize just how good of a night she was having until she saw the score book at the end of the night.

“I had no clue,” Killeavy said. “When I saw that, I was like, ‘really?’ It was a complete shock.”

Killeavy had some help. Senior middie Michela Garrison added nine points on four goals and five assists, junior middie Katelyn Kessler finished with six points on two goals and four assists and senior attack Olivia Hoang scored five goals for Westwood (1-0).

McNeil fell to 0-1.

Westwood led 7-4 at halftime before it broke the game open with a 13-goal second half. The Warriors ended up winning going away, as Killeavy and Garrison continued to score goals.

“We were passing well and cutting well and making sure the ball kept on moving,” Killeavy said. “Our draw controls were pretty good.”

Killeavy added: “I look back to when I first started lacrosse, and I never thought I’d be where I am today. It definitely feels pretty good.”
