TEX HS: Strake Jesuit JV Player Killed in Car Accident
A Strake Jesuit junior varsity player was killed Friday morning in a car accident, varsity head coach Mike Block said.
Charles Alford, 16, died after the car he was driving in rolled over four times. Alford’s mother, who was riding in the passenger seat, is in critical condition, Block said.
Alford was driving from Odessa to College Station in a 2004 pick-up truck that he had just been given by his grandmother for his 16th birthday, Block said. Alford was to take part in a JV lacrosse tournament being staged this weekend at Texas A&M.
Alford was a sophomore who played midfield and attack.
“He was a great kid,” Block said. “He did what you asked, everyday, all the time. He’s going to be missed dearly.”
There was a moment of silence prior to Strake Jesuit’s game Friday night at Westwood in honor of Alford. Westwood players then called over Stake Jesuit’s players for a moment of prayer, and afterward, Westwood gave the game ball to Strake Jesuit.
“I thought that was very classy on Westwood’s part,” Block said.
