COL-UT BOYS: No. 25 Judge Memorial Edges Douglas County

Senior middie Michael Hanover scored the game-winning goal with one second remaining to give No. 25 Judge Memorial a 6-5 victory over Douglas County in a Utah vs. Colorado interstate game Saturday morning.

Hanover scored his only goal of the game when he quick-sticked a high shot into the cage from just off the crease after taking a high pass from sophomore middie Brian Allen. The win gave the Bulldogs (1-1) a split on their two-game Colorado road trip.

Judge Memorial opened the season with a one-goal loss to Air Academy.

Allen registered a team-high four points on two goals and two assists, and sophomore attackman Ethan Gosselin had two assists for the Bulldogs. Senior attackman Zach Huie, junior middie Zach Knettles and junior middie Jeff Scott all scored once to round out the offense.

Defensively, sophomore goalie Matt Crispo saved 10 shots.

“It’s a really huge win,” Judge Memorial head coach David Allen said. “We came over here to play some good competition, and both Air Academy and Douglas County gave us all the game we wanted. When the guys got down a little, they knuckled under and came back.”

In defeat, senior attackman Brian Dieker scored a game-high four goals for Douglas County, which fell to 1-2.

Douglas County led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter and 3-2 at halftime before Judge Memorial came back to take a 4-3 lead by the end of the third.

The game was tied, 5-5, in the waning moments when Allen threaded the needle to Hanover, who picked a great time to score his only goal and give Utah its third win in five games this season over Colorado competition.

“They pass the ball well and have pretty good skill,” Douglas County head coach Kevin Folven said. “We just didn’t play well enough, but they’re a good team.”
