MEN: No. 23 San Diego State Edges Loyola Marymount in OT
Junior middie Evan Youngstrom scored the game-winning goal 10 seconds into overtime to give No. 23 San Diego State a thrilling 8-7 victory over Loyola Marymount in an MCLA Division I game Saturday night in San Diego.
After Loyola Marymount rallied from a three-goal, fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, Youngstrom won the opening face-off clean to start the extra session, raced down the field and fired home a bounce-shot from about 12 yards.
It was Youngstrom’s second goal of the game, and it gave the Aztecs a dramatic win in their season opener.
Senior middie Eric Stevenson finished with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists, junior middie Zee Neidner and Youngstrom each scored twice, and senior attackman Kevin Olson had a goal and an assist for San Diego State.
Defensively, senior goalie Billy Double saved 17 shots.
Loyola Marymount (0-1) lost its season opener.
Loyola Marymount led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, San Diego State led 5-3 at halftime and the Aztecs led 7-4 at the end of the third quarter.
“It’s definitely a great start, especially since we have a lot of young players on the team,” San Diego State assistant coach Dan Collins said. “It’s great to start off with a win to go into BYU on Thursday.”
