NorCAL-SoCAL BOYS: No. 11 LCC Dominates De La Salle, 11-5
It was a tough day for the elite teams of the celebrated East Bay Athletic League.
The conference that almost always provides the North Coast Section’s champion saw three of its top teams go down Friday. First, Foothill-Pleasanton lost to St. Ignatius Prep and Danville Monte Vista fell to Bellarmine Prep in the afternoon.
And the final setback happened a couple hours later and several hundred miles away.
Senior attackman Timmy Andrews registered a game-high five points on two goals and three assists to lead No. 11 La Costa Canyon to a decisive, 11-5 victory over De La Salle in a California Interscholastic Federation game in Carlsbad.
Sophomore attackman Brendan Gaughan added three goals, junior middie Andrew Bertha scored twice, and senior attackman Johnny Morgan and senior middie Andrew Hayden each had a goal and an assist to help the Mavericks (1-0) win their season opener.
Junior middie Michael Gennuso and senior middie Ian Hare each scored once for La Costa Canyon, which led by as many as eight goals in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, junior goalie Eric Sanshagrin saved 10 shots in three quarters.
De La Salle (2-1) had its season-opening, two-game winning streak snapped.
La Costa Canyon led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 7-3 at halftime and 11-3 at the end of the third quarter.
“I loved the boys’ effort,” La Costa Canyon head coach Dallas Hartley said. “They played really hard, and I thought we shared the ball well on offense. It was not bad for our first game.”
