TEX BOYS: THSLL Semifinals: No. 1 Highland Park Blanks Bowie
Senior attackmen Kevin Fritts and Will Ziegler each finished with a co-game-high four points to lead top-ranked Highland Park to a 14-0 victory over Bowie in a Texas High School Lacrosse League Division I semifinal Saturday in Austin.
Fritts scored three goals and added an assist, and Ziegler finished with a goal and three assists, as the defending state champion Fighting Scots (17-1) advanced to the Division I title game for the second straight season.
Highland Park will next face the winner of Saturday night’s Strake Jesuit-St. Mark’s semifinal. The THSLL Division I state championship game is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, at House Park in Austin at 1:30 p.m., CDT.
“We’ve played both of those teams, and they’re well-coached with a lot of depth,” Highland Park head coach Derek Thomson said. “We know whoever we play, it’ll be a very difficult game.”
On Saturday, junior middie Chase Prospere and junior attackman Will Boeing each added a pair of goals, and junior middie Josh Francis and senior middie Austin Mai both finished with a goals and an assist for Highland Park.
Defensively, junior goalie Jordan Lee saved seven shots en route to the shutout.
Bowie finished the season 14-6 and had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
Highland Park dominated from start to finish. The Fighting Scots led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter, 10-0 at halftime and 12-0 going into the fourth quarter.
“We were much sharper than I thought we were Wednesday,” Thomson said. “We had nine players score 14 goals, and I was very pleased with how we shared the ball. We’re looking forward to tomorrow.”
