NLL: Late San Jose Rally Falls Short in Opener Against Calgary

Tracey Kelusky and Josh Sanderson each registered a co-game-high seven points to lead the Calgary Roughnecks to a 12-10 victory over the San Jose Stealth in both teams’ season opener Friday night at HP Pavilion.

Kelusky scored three goals and dished four assists, and Sanderson registered two goals and five assists, as Calgary turned the game around with a seven-goal run that turned a two-goal, second-quarter deficit into a five-goal, fourth-quarter lead.

San Jose rallied in the fourth quarter to twice pull within a goal, but the Stealth could never get the equalizer.

Scott Ranger added six points on a goal and five assists, and Kaleb Toth and Dane Dobbie each finished with four points on two goals and two assists for Calgary (1-0).

In a losing effort, Jeff Zywicki and Colin Doyle both had six-point nights for the Stealth (0-1). Zywicki scored two goals and dished four assists, and Doyle had a goal and five assists.

Other multiple-point producers for San Jose included Rhys Duch, who had five points on two goals and three assists, Cam Sedgwick, who dished four assists, and Frank Resetarits, who scored three times. Tom Johnson added three points on two goals and an assist for San Jose.

The Stealth led 4-1 early in the second quarter after Doyle scored his only goal with 8:33 remaining in the first half. San Jose led 5-3 in the final minute of the first half before the wheels fell off the bus.

Curt Malawsky scored a man-up goal with 58 seconds to play in the half, and Dobbie scored nine seconds later to draw Calgary even, 5-5. The Roughnecks then scored five more unanswered goals in the second half, a run capped by Dobbie, who made it 10-5 Calgary with 3:57 to play in the third quarter.

San Jose answered with four straight fourth-quarter goals and pulled within a goal twice in the final period, at 10-9 and 11-10. Resetarits’ goal with the extra attacker with 41 seconds remaining gave San Jose hope, but Ranger scored with 17 seconds to play to end the Stealth’s late rally.
