TEX BOYS: Division II Stony Point Crushes Division I Cedar Park

It’s getting a little difficult to figure out which teams in Austin are Division I and which teams are Division II.

For the second time in three days, a team from the lower-tier division has beaten the higher-classified team. And this one wasn’t even close.

Junior attackman Austin Fox registered a game-high six points on five goals and one assist to lead Division II Stony Point to a decisive, 16-3 victory over Division I Cedar Park in a Texas High School Lacrosse League Central District game Monday night.

Junior middie Brad Johnson added five points on three goals and two assists, and junior attackman Drake Mercer had four points on three goals and one assist to help the Tigers (2-0) win their second straight. Senior middie Bud Pelkey added three points on two goals and one assist, senior middie Brendan Schindel scored twice and sophomore attackman Conor Schindel had a goal to round out the scoring.

Stony Point, the defending Central District Division II champion, has outscored its first two opponents, 35-4.

“Offensively, we’re controlling the pace real well,” Stony Point head coach Lewis Wright said of his team’s torrid start. “Defensively, we’ve got good communication and are working real well as a team, which is something we didn’t do the last couple seasons. They’re a much tighter unit this year.”

Cedar Park (0-1) lost its season opener.

Stony Point took control early, racing to a 5-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Tigers led 8-1 at halftime and 11-3 going into the fourth quarter.

The result was the second straight in which a Central District Division II team has beaten a Central District Division I team, making the lower-tier league 2-0 against the higher-tiered conference this season. On Saturday, Lake Travis upset McNeil, 7-6, in overtime.

“I figured we would win, just judging on what they from lost last season,” Wright said. “The size of the victory was pretty surprising.”
