MEN: Alex de la Pena Leads Iowa Past Cornell College, 20-2
Junior attackman Alex de la Pena registered a game-high 11 points to lead Iowa to a 20-2 victory over Cornell College in a Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association game Friday night.
In the first college lacrosse game to be played in the nation this season, Iowa got off to a quick start and rolled to an easy victory behind de la Pena's five goals and six assists.
Freshman middie Jay Morgan added eight points on six goals and two assists, sophomore attackman Mitch McElman had six points on three goals and three assists and sophomore middie Nick Beideman scored four goals for the Hawkeyes (1-0), who held Cornell College to five shots on cage.
Sophomore middie Matt Solak finished with three points on a goal and two assists, and freshman middie Tom Plotkin scored once.
Cornell College (0-1) lost its season opener.
Iowa stormed out to a 7-1 lead by the end of the first quarter, and the Hawkeyes didn’t ease up from there. Iowa led 14-2 at halftime and 18-2 going into the fourth quarter.
“I think we hustled pretty well, but there definitely room for improvement,” de la Pena said. “There’s a lot of time until our next game, so we’re just going to keep working hard.”
