SAN DIEGO -- Five-time defending NCAA Division I national champion Northwestern University made Rancho Bernardo High School its home away from home for the second straight season Saturday night.
Sophomore attack Shannon Smith registered a career-high nine points on six goals and three assists, and she also picked up a game-high five ground balls, to lead the Wildcats to an 18-6 victory over Massachusetts in the second-annual Surfside Cup.
Playing before a crowd of 1,315, Northwestern dominated in every way and once again showed Southern California why it is the nation’s premier women’s lacrosse program. The Wildcats outshot the Minutewomen, 37-14, they had a 21-5 advantage in draw controls and they won the ground-ball battle, 21-11.

Utah-Based Luge Star Finds Time for Lacrosse
Bingham's Taylor Morris a Potential Future Olympian
By James Joseph

Lacrosse is known as the fastest game on two feet.
But the speed of the sport is all relative to Taylor Morris, a guy who flies down icy tracks at 90 miles per hour. Morris, a senior middie at Bingham High in Utah, is a member of the United States Junior National Luge Team and a potential future Olympian.
Morris travels and competes on the Junior World Luge Tour eight months out of the year. His commitment to the sport forced him to give up football, wrestling and track. But he’s continued to play lacrosse. And now the sport provides a welcome respite from competition on the ice.
“It is great to have a break from all the cold-weather places and to enjoy a warm sunny day on the field,” Morris said. “So the three-month lacrosse season is fantastic.”

St. Mark’s midfielder Fred Addy will be heading to Princeton next fall to play lacrosse at one of the nation’s most storied college programs.
Addy’s father, William, was an All-Ivy League linebacker for Princeton in the 1980s, and the school was Addy’s “first choice,” he said.
“Right when I heard they were interested, I had my sights set on Princeton,” said Addy, who is ranked No. 8 among high school seniors in the Western United States, according to the WSL Elite 25 selection committee. But while he can look forward to an exciting future at Princeton, Addy is living in the present. He has one more season – and some unfinished business – at St. Mark’s.

More than 5,000 coaches, officials and lacrosse enthusiasts attended the event, held in Baltimore for the second year in a three-year stretch. Friday night’s highlight was keynote speaker Lou Holtz, the former football coach at Notre Dame and now an analyst for ESPN.
Holtz spoke about setting goals and preaching good values. His message was that if you want to be happy for a lifetime, coach young people.

SAN DIEGO -- Even with his team holding a seven-goal lead, Arizona Burn Orange middie Brock Ghelfi wasn’t going to let up while taking a breather on the bench late in the 2010 Adrenaline Challenge championship game.
When the public-address announcer gave a two-minute warning, the sophomore proclaimed, “We haven’t won it yet!”
His teammates heard his call.
The seventh-seeded Burn maintained its intensity to the end, claiming a decisive 8-1 victory over fourth-seeded San Diego LaxDawgs Brown Elite on Sunday afternoon at Robb Field to win its first title in an Adrenaline tournament since the club that used to be named Arizona Starz won the Sonoma Shootout in July 2005.

SAN DIEGO -- The Western United States’ club lacrosse championship will truly be on the line this weekend when Robb Field hosts the 9th-annual Adrenaline Challenge.
Started in 2002, the Challenge has grown from a small gathering of a handful of teams to one of the most meaningful club lacrosse competitions in the country. This weekend, 64 teams from 10 states and two Canadian provinces will face-off in three divisions to determine who is the Best in the West.
The Boys Elite Division will have a 36-team field, led by defending champion NorCal Fog City and 2008 champion Brady’s Bunch. Last year, Fog City edged Brady’s Bunch, 7-6, in a thrilling finale.
